TRUTH 80: MODERN MEDICINE IS NO SUBSTITUTE
The prevailing attitude toward health is that it is something that a creature either has or doesn't. It's all in the cards. If disease strikes, well, that's just one of those things...thank goodness we have modern medicine.
This leads to a devil-may-care, carpe diem lifestyle that is even extended to our companion animals. The result is disaster as time marches on.
Not only are the majority of health problems self-induced, but modern medicine is no savior. In fact, it is the number one killer. See Why Modern Medicine is the Greatest Threat to Health.
In 2007 Americans spent an average of $8,000 per year per person on health care for a grand total of about 3 trillion dollars. For what? America, the biggest health care spender, ranks an embarrassing 42nd in the world for life expectancy and 37th for infant mortality. Deaths from prescription medicines numbered 33,000. Doctor errors, adverse drug interactions, and infections received in the hospital or doctor's office increase the tally of deaths per year to in excess of one-half million people. That's the equivalent of about three airliners packed full going down every day of the year.
No, modern medicine is not going to save you or your pet from all the crippling killers like cancer, heart disease, obesity, organ failure, diabetes and the like. Yes, doctors can sew a limb back on, but their approach to health is as flawed as nutritionists'. Both assume the body is a mere machine and that any problem can be fixed by adding or removing pieces.
Modern medicine is about naming diseases, managing lab numbers, and treating symptoms. It is disease care. It has no idea (or ignores) what creates health. It is too little too late.
Restoring our more natural environmental context, including our food, can relieve more pain and suffering and bring better health than any other means. It is incredible that a 3 trillion dollar medical care industry ignores the preventive flowers blooming at their feet and instead single-mindedly pursues invasive technology and pharmaceutical agents which attempt to force the body into submission. Nutrition and healthful lifestyle are the ignored blossoms blooming at their feet that could do so much more - and more pleasantly - than drugs and surgery.

Thought for the day: "Animals have these advantages over man: They have no theologians to instruct them, their funerals cost them nothing, and no one starts lawsuits over their wills." Voltaire
Phrase for the day: 'glycemic index' – the Glycemic Index is a dietary index that's used to rank carbohydrate-based foods. The Glycemic Index predicts the rate at which the ingested food will increase blood sugar levels. The Glycemic Index of most pet foods is inappropriately high due to the presence of significant levels of starchy carbohydrate ingredients. This, in turn, leads to the panoply of degenerative diseases in pets (and people).
